Students from Monsignor Percy Johnson Catholic Secondary School in Etobicoke will Write for Rights in support of Amnesty International, to mark International Human Rights Day on December 10th.

Write for Rights takes place from 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the Monsignor Percy Johnson school library.  The school expects that between 30 and 50 students will participate during each period (hour). Some teachers are bringing their classes, while other students have signed up individually and will be excused for a portion of the period (long enough to write a letter). Staff will also have an opportunity to participate.

Amnesty International currently has eight appeal cases from which to choose. Students have been introduced to the various cases, and can select to support whichever case resonates with them.

They’ve been asked to contribute $1.00 towards the cost of an international stamp, and Student Council will be subsidizing the rest.

Initiated by teachers, Marilyn Duarte and Isabel Duarte, staff and students showed an immediate and keen interest in participating.  A group of students, who are passionate about Amnesty and promoting human rights, quickly emerged and grew.  This enthusiastic core group of young people have been promoting the event with their peers, helping with organizing the event and will be helping facilitate the event on December 10th.

Write for Rights is an opportunity for students to use their literacy skills to promote positive social change in support of Catholic values.

Msgr. Johnson is located at 2170 Kipling Avenue.
