hwcdsb-largestOn October 18th, 5,000 students and staff from the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board took part in the 6th Annual “Walk with Christ: Justice for the Poor” Pilgrimage, raising an estimated $75,000 for humanitarian projects in Uganda, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Deemed to be the largest service project in the history of the board, the pilgrimage seeks to raise students’ awareness of the injustice of world hunger and inadequate health care, shelter and education.

“As a Catholic school community, the pilgrimage gives us the opportunity to do what the Lord asks of us: to act justly, love tenderly, and walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8),” says Superintendent of Education Nancy DiGregorio, who founded the project several years ago. Since the first pilgrimage in May 2004, the event has raised $275,000 to support development projects, orphanages and schools in the Third World.

The pilgrimage began with a Eucharistic Celebration at Cathedral High School, followed by an 8-kilometre hike up the escarpment trail to St. Daniel Catholic Elementary School, where participants were treated to a barbecue courtesy of Harvey’s Restaurants.
