Press release
Four trustees of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) are bowing to pressure from constituents and media to reveal how they voted during the controversial election of the boards new Chair Angela Kennedy.
The TCDSB has been under provincial supervision since June of 2008. The provincial Supervisor ruled that the trustee voted for chair will remain secret.
However Trustees Rob Davis, John Del Grande, Catherine LeBlanc-Miller and Maria Rizzo have now revealed that they all voted for Catherin LeBlanc-Miller.
Kennedy was elected in a 7 to 4 vote on Wednesday December 9, 2009 in a race against Trustee Catherine LeBlanc-Miller.
The eleven trustees in attendance at the meeting to elect a chair were:
| Maria Rizzo | Joe Martino | Barbara Poplawski |
| Rob Davis | Sal Piccininni | Angela Kennedy |
| Catherine LeBlanc-Miller | Ann Andrachuck | Mary Ann Robillard |
| John Del Grande | Paul Crawford |
Trustee Kennedy is subject of an application to have her seat declared vacant over conflict of interest allegations launched by a Toronto ratepayer Arnold Amaral. It is alleged that she participated in a budget decision in May 14 of 2008 to prevent teacher layoffs despite having a child or children employed as teachers at the board. The resultant $12 million deficit resulted in the Minister of Education taking control of the TCDSB rendering trustees powerless. The allegations are yet to proven in court. A court date is scheduled for February 1, 2010.
It is a generally accepted practice in politics that if facing charges one should step aside until your name is cleared in order to protect the reputation of the organization you lead. The four trustees believe Trustee Kennedy should focus on her defence
